Typhoon Ondoy Floods Metro Manila:
Update on ASCM Community
On
Saturday, September 26, 2009, the Philippines was hit by Tropical Storm "Ondoy"
(international name: Ketsana).
The typhoon dumped the heaviest rain in Metro Manila (16.7 inches in 12 hours)
causing the largest flooding tragedy in over 40 years. The Philippine government
has issued a State of Calamity.
Houses in several areas are still immersed in water. The death toll has risen
to 240. Currently, 37 people remain missing, 374,890 people are sheltered in
makeshift evacuation centers, 1.2 million families are still without power,
and many more are without running water.
Almost everyone in Metro Manila has been affected and the same is true for
the ASCM community. The ASCM building experienced flooding in the basement parking
area but suffered no damaged. Unfortunately, many of our faculty, staff, and
students reside in areas of Metro Manila that were hardest hit. We thank the
Lord that we have had no reports of injuries.
Several of the ASCM faculty and staff members were forced to leave their homes
and seek refuge in evacuation centers. The houses of Ailene Amargo, Rodrigo
Raymundo Fernando, Erwin Balangue, Danilo Cercado, Romer Macalinao, Wilson Chingcuanco,
Beth Tabura, and Leyte Rimonte were completely flooded. In most cases, their
personal belongings, household effects, and property have been lost or severely
damaged. Reports are still coming in from our students.
Please pray for the Philippines, for everyone impacted by this tragic event,
and especially for the entire ASCM family.
